Event Details

Businesses, civic organizations, and individuals participate in a chili cooking competition every September. People that attend the event sample and judge the chili and award the top choices with prizes. Tasting kits are available for sampling and a carnival with games helps keep the children busy and excited. The streets are blocked for accessibility and safety for individuals.

Beaver Dunes ATV AreaBeaver Dunes State Park has set aside approximately 300 acres of sand dunes for motorcycles, dune buggies, ATVs and 4x4s. Operated by the Corps of Engineers, the dune area is open from 8:00 A.M. until 11:00 P.M. every day, year round. Dune entrance fees may be paid daily, through the purchase of a 3-day pass (Friday-Sunday, March 1-November30), or an annual dune pass. All vehicles must have 10 ft. whips with flags attached.

Beaver Dunes Camping & RecreationHackberry Bend Campground has seven RV campsites with water and electric hookups and 10 tent sites; Five RV sites are pull-thrus and one is handicapped accessible. Also located in Hackberry Bend is a one room primitive cabin which sleeps 4 and can be reserved.

Pioneer Campground is located adjacent to the ORV area. This campground has 13 water and electric sites with direct access to the dunes.

Both campgrounds have a comfort station with hot showers and a sanitary dump station for recreation vehicles in Hackberry Bend.

Another area of the park is Big Sandy picnic area. This area has a sand volleyball court, basketball goal, horseshoe pits, playground, nature trail, and 2 reservable shelters. Pavilion #1 will accommodate up to 50 persons and #2 up to 20. The pavilions may be reserved a year in advance of occupancy date. Scattered through the park are also individual picnic tables, some with cooking grills, for the day use picnicker.

The children also enjoy fishing in the park's small 15-acre Beaver Lake, stocked with largemouth bass, channel cat, and perch.

Beaver Dunes Hiking & WildlifeThe self-guided Pioneer Interpretive Trail, a one mile hike through the dune area, is an excellent way to view the wildlife, plant species, and geology of Beaver Dunes State Park.

Wildlife who make the park home includes coyote, striped skunk, opossum, prairie rattlesnake, raccoon, cottontail rabbit, whitetail deer, wild turkey, bobwhite quail, and a variety of common spring and summer birds. Native plants include sand plum, wild grape, sand sagebrush, skunkbrush, horse mint, lobe mallow, yucca, Indian blanket, and a variety of drought-resistant grasses.
