Prairie Lakes Region
The Prairie Lakes Region covers the south-central plains of Nebraska, the broad agricultural country running from the Kansas line north along the Platte River to the Sandhills’ southern edge. The terrain is mostly flat — irrigated corn-and-soybean country drained by the Platte, Republican, and Big Blue rivers — broken by a string of large reservoirs that gave the region its name. Lake McConaughy alone covers 36,000 acres at full pool. Nineteen counties cover the region. Hall holds Grand Island, the largest city; Buffalo holds Kearney and the University of Nebraska at Kearney; Lincoln County holds North Platte and the Bailey Yard (the world’s largest railroad classification yard); Keith holds Ogallala and Lake McConaughy; Kearney County holds Minden and the Pioneer Village. Lake McConaughy, Harlan County Lake, and Swanson Reservoir handle the major water recreation; the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument spans I-80 at Kearney. Most trips here split among rail, lake, and small-town threads. North Platte handles railroad heritage and Buffalo Bill’s Scout’s Rest Ranch; Lake McConaughy at Ogallala draws summer beachgoers and fishermen; the Archway Monument and Pioneer Village carry the western migration history; Grand Island runs the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer.
