Pete's Place
category : Historic Sites
Pete's Place has built a national reputation for itself and Krebs, Oklahoma, and has been featured in numerous publications, newspapers, and magazines. It is the gathering place for many notable people and most who visit can't wait to return and tell others about the experience.
Pete's Place restaurant is a "family" tradition. Pete Prichard was born Peitro Piegari in San Gregario Magne, Italy on June 29, 1895, and came to the U.S. as a child. He changed his name to Pete Prichard when he began working the coal mines around Krebs at eleven years of age. At age 21, he suffered a severe accident that left him unable to work the mines.
The people of the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory brewed a homemade beer and it was only natural that they taught the Italian immigrants, who came to work the mines , how to make the home brew. Pete began making the brew, choc' beer, and found himself serving bread, cheese, and sausages when visitors gathered. A prosperous business developed and in 1925, Pete formally opened a "restaurant" and it has been serving ever since.
Joe Prichard, who now wears the chef's hat, operates the restaurant today in the same house originally opened by Pete in 1925. The fine food found there is served family style, with all entrees served with a generous helping of spaghetti, meatballs, ravioli, cheese, salad and garlic bread. Entrees available will suit most any taste with all the originals plus many more including lamb fries, chicken, veal, and beef prepared, "Old-world Italian" in healthy portions.
