Smoke Hole Caverns

category : Caving
Smoke Hole Caverns' magnificent formations are the result of millions of years of intricate processes and trillions of drops of mineral laden water. Water dripping and seeping through the limestone bedrock leaves trace mineral deposits that over millions of years creates the spectacular formations you will see underground--The World's Longest Ribbon Stalactite, Crystal Cave Corral Pool, The Room of a Million Stalactites, Rainbow Falls, Artesian Spring, and the history revolving around the three groups of people whom used the caverns. Like much of WV and the Potomac Highlands, the history of Smoke Hole Caverns is tied to the Seneca Indians. Legend has it that during the Civil War, gold bars and coins were hidden in the Caverns walls. The many rooms and secluded nature of the Caverns were also the ideal place for early settlers and immigrants to make corn whiskey, also known as moonshine. An orginal still remains on display! Complete with it's story!!

Our result also offers lodging amenities to meet your needs and budget. We are riverside along the banks of the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River offering a Log motel, Honeymoon Log Cabins and Family Log Cabins.
