Historic Pittsboro

Pittsboro, named for William Pitt the Younger, was established in 1787 near Chatham Courthouse, the locus of county government since 1771. The present courthouse is a good starting place for a leisurely walking tour of the town and its National Historic Register-listed district. From the courthouse, proceed on East St. (US 64). On the north side of the street, you’ll find the Presbyterian church and Masonic Lodge. Turning north at Masonic Street, you’ll pass the Manly law office. At the end of the block, turn west to pass three historic houses, and at the traffic signal, turn right on Hillsboro Street (US 15-501) to the Hall-London House. Crossing Hillsboro Street on Hanks Street and continuing west for two blocks, you’ll arrive at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church and cemetery. Located in Chatham County.
