Fort Bragg

Named for General Braxton Bragg, who was a native of Warren County who served in the US Army during the Seminole and Mexican Wars as well as the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Call Fayetteville CVB for more information. It is home of XVIII Airborne Corps and the 82nd Airborne Division as well as of thousands of non-jumping troops. It is one of the largest military reservations in the United States and considered NC’s 10th largest city. It is situated between the city of Fayetteville and the mid state resorts of Pinehurst and Southern Pines, with a total area of over 138,000 acres which is three times as large as the District of Columbia. Also at Fort Bragg is the John F. Kennedy Center for Special Warfare (Airborne) which with its sister organization, the US Army Special Warfare School prepares units and individuals to carry out cold war as well as hot war missions. The Special Warfare School trains officers of the US Armed Forces as well as allied foreign officers and US Army enlisted men and women in counter-insurgency, psychological operations and unconventional (guerrilla) warfare. The US Army Training Center at Ft. Bragg was activated in 1966 as part of the overall Army buildup. Then center begins a basic combat training cycle each week and has a trainee population of approximately 11,000. More than 2,400 officers and men and women serve as cadre and administrators at the center. The Memorial War Museum of the 82nd Division, in the famed :all American” Division’s permanent headquarters area at Ft. Bragg is open to visitors daily and Sundays, except on Mondays. The US Army Special Warfare School Museum in the US Army John F. Kennedy Center for Special Warfare School (Airborne) is open to the public daily and Sundays, except on Mondays.
