Burwell School Historic Site

The house (c. 1821, 1848) and outbuildings served as the Rev. and Mrs. Burwell’s Female School from 1837 to 1857, one of the earliest female schools in NC. The house includes furnishings and exhibits that depict the life at the school as well as occasional traveling exhibits. A formal garden with significant plantings is also on site. Daily guided tours during hours of operation focusing on the Burwell family, their slaves and the school’s students in antebellum Hillsborough. Self-guided Beehive tours focus on the life during the Civil War when the site was the home of the Collins Family of Somerset Plantation. Special tours by appointment.
