Herrick Fen Nature Preserve

The 140-acre Herrick Fen Preserve was formed during the last ice age, as glaciers retreated some 12,000-14,000 years ago, resulting in unique geologic, hydrologic, biologic and physical features. The preserve’s boardwalk showcases some of these distinct features, such as seeps and fen plants – including bayberry, a shrub found in only two other nearby locations in Ohio, and the round-leaved sundew, a tiny carnivorous plant that inconspicuously grows on sphagnum moss. Open year-round, dawn to dusk. Trail is 1 mile, rated easy, with 700 ft. of wheelchair accessible boardwalk. Activities include hiking, wildlife watching, volunteer opportunities (contact [email protected]).
