Burt-Stark Mansion

Built in the 1830s, this Greek-Revival house was the site of the first reading of the secession papers, giving birth to the Confederacy. The “Cause” died here as well. On May 2, 1865, less than a month after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, the war council of the Confederate forces met with President Jefferson Davis and formally disbanded the armies. A National Historic Landmark, the house contains Stark family antiques, including the furnishing used by Jefferson and his war council.
