Mountainland

Mountainland covers the central mountain country of Utah, the Wasatch Range and surrounding valleys running south of Salt Lake County and east toward the Uinta Basin. The terrain is dominated by the high Wasatch — Mount Timpanogos at 11,752 feet, the steep Wasatch Front rising abruptly above the Utah Valley, and the high alpine basins around Park City. Utah Lake (the largest natural freshwater lake in Utah) fills the southern valley floor. Summit, Utah, and Wasatch counties cover the region. Utah County holds Provo (the largest city, with Brigham Young University), Orem, American Fork, and Lehi (with Thanksgiving Point); Summit holds Park City (the 2002 Winter Olympics host), Heber, and Coalville; Wasatch holds Heber City and Midway. Anchor attractions include the BYU campus and museums, the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley ski areas, the Olympic Park (with bobsled and ski-jumping facilities), Timpanogos Cave National Monument, and the Heber Valley Historic Railroad. Most trips here center on Park City and Provo. Park City handles the largest single-stream visitor traffic — three-mountain skiing in winter, mountain biking and hiking in summer, the Sundance Film Festival each January, and Main Street’s restaurant-and-shop scene; Provo runs the BYU and Utah Lake itinerary; Heber’s Soldier Hollow and Strawberry Reservoir handle quieter year-round visits.
