Central Wyoming covers the high plains country between the Powder River Basin and the Laramie Range — five counties (Converse, Goshen, Natrona, Niobrara, Platte) tracking the North Platte River as it bends north and east through Casper toward the Nebraska line. The terrain is mostly open: short-grass prairie, sandstone outcrops, the Laramie Mountains rising on the western horizon, and the long Glendo Reservoir filling a stretch of the Platte. Casper anchors Natrona County as the largest city, with the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center and the rim drive on Casper Mountain. Douglas in Converse County holds the Wyoming State Fair and Ayres Natural Bridge; Glenrock and Casper Mountain run the closer outdoor corridor. Glendo Reservoir straddles Platte and Converse with Glendo State Park; Wheatland sits below it on the irrigated ranch country; Lusk holds Niobrara County and the Stagecoach Museum. Trips here usually anchor on Casper and the historic trails. The Oregon, California, Mormon, and Pony Express trails all crossed within an hour’s drive; Independence Rock and Devil’s Gate are reachable as a long day trip. Summer is the working season; the open country is unforgiving in winter wind.
