19th Century American Popular Music

This presentation examines the phenomenon of our music before electronic amplification. It considers various types of music, the uses to which it was put, settings and performers, instruments, and its significance in American life. Performances recorded on audio and video illustrate some types of music popular in the last century. Several tunes will be performed live on period instruments adding to the immediacy and texture.
