Fort Hancock

Located in the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area near the tip of the Sandy Hook peninsula overlooking the entrance to New York Harbor, this fort played a key role in harbor defense and navigation since 1764 when the Sandy Hook Lighthouse (the oldest operating lighthouse in America) was built.
