The Ancient City of Kanawha: the Kanawha Valley Mound Complex

presented by Darla Spencer, Registered Professional Archaeologist

In the Kanawha Valley below Charleston, a complex of mounds, earthworks, enclosures, and graded ways was documented and given the name “The Ancient City of Kanawha.” Hundreds of artifacts from the mounds have been curated at the Smithsonian for over 120 years, and very few individuals have seen them.

Darla will present a PowerPoint presentation describing the artifacts and what is known about the people who built the Ancient City of Kanawha. An exhibit of photographs of some of the objects from the mounds will also be on display.
