Madonna of the Trail Statue
At the end of Cumberland Rd., the first highway built by the US government, Vandalia awaited early travelers who made the long journey westward. The statue marks the terminal point of this historic roadway for modern day visitors.
The 10-feet-tall figure is made of pink Algonite stone and was erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution whose vision inspired sculptor August Leimbach from Kaltennordheim, Germany.
