Marion County Historical Society – Founders Month

Boaz Fleming, the Founder of Middletown, Va., now known as Fairmont, was born on January 3, 1758. Francis H. Pierpont, The “Father of West Virginia” and the First Governor of Restored Virginia appointed by Abraham Lincoln, was born on January 25, 1814. Fairmont (Middletown) was established on January 19, 1820. Marion County was established on January 14, 1842, as a result of Boaz Fleming’s conversation with Dolly Madison. Open Houses will be on all three of the above listed dates. Dr. JoAnn Lough, one of the History Heroes for 2006, will be present to discuss these historical events on all three days. Thomas Koon, Historian & Author will also be at the January 13th Open House as well live period music. Apple cider & cookies will be served. Tours of the Museum will also be available at this time.
