Middletown

The village of Middletown was once Hyde County’s largest port and it became its first incorporated town in 1787. Today, the remnants of this thriving town still stand as testimony to its once thriving history. An annual Fourth of July celebration is held on the Sunday nearest the holiday and provides a huge family-style picnic and a day of family fun. The county’s Civil War heritage will be honored when a monument, soon to be erected, stands in a small park along the banks of Middle Creek. The village is one of 10 historic sites on the Hyde County Talking Houses and Historic Places driving tour. These sites are equipped with am radio transmitters which you can tune to from the convenience of your car to learn the history of the area. Middletown is also on the Historic Lake Landing Landmarks riding tour.
