Miner’s Memorial Park & AEP ReCreation Land
The “Big Muskie” bucket serves as cornerstone to the Miner’s Memorial Park and sits atop a hill within the AEP ReCreation Land as a reminder of the history and significance of surface mining in southeast Ohio. The AEP ReCreation Land, Ohio’s largest privately owned recreation area, is over 30,000 acres of reclaimed surface mined land which is now available for use by the public for hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, birding, horse back riding and a variety of other outdoor recreational pursuits. There are over 300 ponds on the property and miles of trails.
Many special activities take place in the area throughout the year including, Hooked on Fishing, Women in the Outdoors, Night Under the Stars and the annual mushroom hunt. Over 380 campsites are located wthin the area and, like the other park facilities, are available at no charge. A free, tranferable permit is required to camp and does not have to be renewed.
The mountain bike trail was designed by internationally recognized bikers and is an intermediate to difficult course. For an event schedule for the trails and other areas check www.aep.com and follow the recreation/stewardship links.
