Mount Airy Museum of Regional History

The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting the natural, historic and artistic heritage of the back country region of northwestern North Carolina and southwest Virginia. A 100-foot mural of the surrounding mountains is located in the main gallery and will the stage for your tour. Exhibits provide a trip back in time, from the natural history to the world’s largest open-face granite quarry, a stop at an authentic reproduction of a log cabin; a turn-of-the-century general store; a train room where a 70-foot scale model train exhibit is nearing completion; a gallery on fire fighters that includes a 1916, 1926 and 1946 fire truck, all used by the City of Mount Airy. Second floor exhibits focus on the early 1900s and changing exhibits. A visit to the observation room, located on the fourth floor of the clock tower, provides an awesome view of surrounding mountains. The Museum Gift Shoppe, located in the Main Gallery, has gift items related to exhibits, plus local and regional history books are for sale.Hours are Tue-Fri, 10 am-4 pm and Sat, 10 am-2 pm. A small admission fee is charged.
