Pope Air Force Base
Adjoins Fort Bragg. It is named after First Lt. Harley H. Pope, who was killed in an airplane accident near Fayetteville in 1919. It is a major tactical airlift base of the Tactical Air Command. Since its beginning in 1919, aircraft stationed at Pope have participated in many major actions during peacetime as well as in war. Call Fayetteville CVB for more information. The 464th Tactical Airlift Wing received the coveted Mackey Trophy for the most meritorious flight of the year in 1965 for its actions in evacuating civilians from the strife torn Republic of the Congo. Also, head quartered at Pope is the US Air Force Tactical Airlift Center.
