U.S. National Cemetery No. 1
Walk among heroes at Fort Scott National Cemetery, one of the 12 original national cemeteries designated by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862. Older than Arlington, this rolling hillside is the final resting place for Indian soldiers Stick Out Belly and Deer in Water, Kansas’ most famous poet Eugene “Ironquill” Ware, and defenders of freedom from the Civil War to Vietnam.
