Crowell
Established in 1891 as the seat of Foard County, Crowell is the retail center for agricultural and oil production. In the mid-1800s the area was the domain of Comanche Indians who figured in history’s most famous case of a white girl captured and reared by Native Americans. The girl was Cynthia Ann Parker, taken by Indians in 1836, and recaptured by white men in 1860. The recapture site, Pease River Battlefield, is marked by a historical marker some nine miles northeast on F.M. 98.
