Refugio

Refugio (Re-FURy-o) was founded in 1834 at the site of the Mission Nuestra Seora del Refugio, relocated here from the swamps of Calhoun County in 1795. Refugio today is the seat of Refugio County, the commercial center for oil-producing, ranching, farming region. Public parks offer picnicking, playgrounds, tennis courts, and municipal swimming pool. Fishing and water sports are enjoyed on the nearby coastal bays, while hunters seek migratory waterfowl, deer, wild turkey, and wild boar.
