Harper County
As early settlers began arriving in 1877, they found a vast prairie covered with native grasses and inhabited by abundant wildlife. The county still boasts plentiful natural resources. A highlight of activities conducted each year include the antique and classic car show in May, the Harper County 4th of July Celebration at Anthony Lake, the Anthony Downs horse & dog races in mid-July, the Attica Rodeo in late July and the Harper County Fair held the second weekend of August along with numerous art & craft festivals. Visitors are welcome to explore the historic Washburn courthouse, diverse museums, Danville and Runnymede churches and re-discover local heritage within our diverse museums. Travelers are encouraged to journey through Freeport- the smallest incorporated city with a bank in the U.S.A. Harper County is also fortunate to offer a nostalgic drive-in theater experience, roller skating, bowling and golfing. Anthony Lake provides swimming, fishing, boating, skiing, a shooting and archery range. At work or play, the county hosts a friendly attitude and a cooperative spirit. Locals and visitors alike can expect to be greeted by a friendly smile and wave.
