Hayes Civil War Encampment

Oct
17

Mark the birthday of Ohio Civil War hero and 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes by experiencing life during the Civil War. More than 700 costumed re-enactors camp on the grounds of the Hayes estate for this two-day event. Soldiers conduct military drills, chat with visitors and re-create “Morgan’s Raid” (the only Civil War battle fought in Ohio) on the lawn in front of the Hayes Home – complete with cavalry and cannon. Vendors of period wares and food set up canvas tents along Sutlers’ Row to ply their trades.

The highlight of the weekend is a formal, military graveside service. President George W. Bush’s representatives will be on hand. Veterans, re-enactors, and active-service military personnel also take part in this solemn, moving observance. Special discounted tours of the Hayes Home and Hayes Museum are available to Encampment attendees
