Pow Wow at the Mounds
Moundville Archaeological Park—Powwows are a modern Native American tradition that evolved from many different Indian cultures coming together out west. A powwow is the native people’s way of meeting, trading, joining in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships and making new ones. It is also a time to renew thoughts of the old ways and to teach and preserve the values of a rich and ever-changing culture.
Intertribal dancing, storytelling, flute playing and demonstrations of various arts and crafts are featured throughout the powwow. Visitors can purchase one-of-a-kind handmade items that represent the works of several different tribes. Native foods such as frybread and Indian tacos and regular concessions are also available for visitors.
