Westcott’s Neighborhood Walking Tour
Guided walking tours offered by the Westcott House Foundation – Memorial Day Weekend into September.
In 1909, when Burton and Orpha Westcott moved to their newly completed house on the northwest corner of East High Street and Greenmount Avenue, there was no better place to live. East High Street, the most prestigious thoroughfare in Springfield, was embraced by inventors and entrepreneurs, local businessmen and community leaders. The mostly large-scale homes built along this street, designed in Neoclassical Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque style, reflect the taste of the noted individuals who lived here at the turn of the last century. We might only guess what the neighbors’ reaction was to the new Westcott House that looked nothing like the residences down the street.
Today the grand houses of East High Street are monuments to a golden age of the community once known as The Champion City. Join us for an afternoon stroll along East High Street to observe the evolution of American residential architecture and trace the stories behind the brick and mortar.
