Bluegrass Region
The Bluegrass Region sits in north-central Kentucky, a rolling plateau of fertile limestone soil that gives the namesake grass its blue cast in spring sun. Lexington anchors the region, surrounded by the horse-farm country that has shaped the area for two centuries — black plank fences, stone walls, and white barns across gentle ridges drained by small creeks toward the Kentucky River. The region runs across Fayette, Bourbon, Scott, Woodford, Jessamine, Madison, and Mercer counties, with anchor towns like Lexington, Versailles, Georgetown, Paris, Winchester, and Harrodsburg. The bourbon trail runs through several of these — Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace just to the west, and smaller distilleries in Anderson and Mercer counties. Most trips are built around one of three threads: the horse industry (Keeneland, the Kentucky Horse Park, working farm tours), the bourbon trail, or the Shaker history at Pleasant Hill. The driving is part of it — narrow rural roads through farm country, with few packed itineraries and most travelers staying in or near Lexington.
