Chariton Valley
Chariton Valley sits in north-central Missouri, a stretch of agricultural country drained by the Chariton River as it works its way south toward the Missouri. The landscape is rolling rather than flat — gentle ridges between river bottoms, hardwood timber along the watercourses, and farmland filling the spaces between. Counties in the region include Chariton, Linn, Macon, Sullivan, Adair, Putnam, Schuyler, Knox, and Scotland, with Kirksville (home to Truman State University) as the main anchor and Macon, Brookfield, Memphis, and Milan handling the secondary travel hubs. Long Branch and Thomas Hill reservoirs sit toward the western edge, and Long Branch State Park and Wakonda State Park add public-land access for camping and fishing. Trips here run unhurried. The region rewards travelers willing to take county roads between courthouse squares and small museums — antique shops, diners, hunting and fishing access on the river and reservoirs. It’s the kind of place where the route between stops is part of the experience, not an interruption.
