Fairfield County
Fairfield County covers the southwestern corner of Connecticut, the wedge of suburban-and-coastal towns nearest to New York City. The terrain runs gently rolling — Long Island Sound shoreline at the south, the foothills of the Litchfield Hills climbing northward — with the Housatonic and the Saugatuck rivers cutting through. Most of the county sits within commuting reach of Manhattan. Anchor cities include Bridgeport (the largest city in Connecticut), Stamford, Norwalk, Danbury, Greenwich, Westport, and Fairfield, with smaller communities at Newtown, Ridgefield, New Canaan, Wilton, and Bethel. The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, the Barnum Museum (P.T. Barnum’s hometown), the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, and Sherwood Island and Squantz Pond state parks cover most of the visitor attractions. Most trips are short and Manhattan-adjacent. Coastal towns like Westport and Greenwich handle the suburban-restaurant and gallery scene; Bridgeport and Norwalk run their working-port itineraries (ferry to Port Jefferson, oyster festivals); Danbury and the Berkshire foothill edge run hiking, antiquing, and small-museum days. Train access from Grand Central reaches most of the major towns.
