Historic South Region
The Historic South Region covers the central and east-central part of Georgia, the broad Piedmont and upper coastal plain country running from Athens and Augusta in the north down through Macon to the Statesboro and Vidalia onion country. The terrain runs gently rolling — red Piedmont clay in the north giving way to flatter sand and pine flatwoods at the fall line — drained by the Savannah, Ogeechee, Oconee, and Ocmulgee rivers. The region covers more than 60 counties. Anchor cities include Athens (home of the University of Georgia), Augusta (host of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National), Macon (Allman Brothers and Ocmulgee Mounds country), Milledgeville (the antebellum capital), Statesboro, Dublin, and Warner Robins. Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park sits in Macon; Augusta’s Riverwalk carries the eastern edge; Athens runs college-town music history and the Georgia Museum of Art. Most trips split among college, music, and antebellum-history threads. Athens handles the university and music itinerary (R.E.M., the B-52s, the 40 Watt Club); Macon carries the Allman Brothers Museum and the Mounds; Milledgeville and Madison run the antebellum and architectural-tour circuit; Augusta builds around the Masters week and a quiet riverfront in other months.
