Kansas City Region
The Kansas City Region anchors the western edge of Missouri at the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas rivers. The terrain is rolling — bluffs above the rivers, wooded creek valleys, and rolling agricultural land extending east. The metro spills slightly into Kansas on the western side. Jackson County holds Kansas City proper and Independence, while Clay, Platte, Cass, Ray, and Lafayette counties make up the surrounding ring. Anchor towns include Lee’s Summit, Liberty, Blue Springs, and Excelsior Springs. Truman’s home and the Truman Library sit in Independence; the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the American Jazz Museum, and the National WWI Museum cluster in central Kansas City. Most visits build around three threads: barbecue and the food scene that grew from it, the jazz and music history concentrated in 18th & Vine, and the river-and-park system that defines how the city moves. Day trips out to the smaller communities pick up Civil War sites, vineyards, and Missouri River towns.
