Las Vegas Territory
Las Vegas Territory fills the southern tip of Nevada, the desert valley and surrounding mountains that hold Las Vegas itself. The setting is high Mojave Desert — the valley floor sits around 2,000 feet, with the Spring Mountains rising to nearly 12,000 feet at Mount Charleston just west of the city, and the Lake Mead and Colorado River corridor running along the eastern and southern edges. Clark County holds nearly all of the region’s population. Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, and Mesquite are the main cities, with smaller anchors at Searchlight, Laughlin, and Pahrump just over the line in Nye County. Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Valley of Fire State Park, and Spring Mountains National Recreation Area handle most of the public-land draws around the metro. Trips here split sharply. The Strip and Fremont Street carry the casino, dining, and entertainment itinerary; the surrounding desert holds the day-trip itinerary — Hoover Dam, Red Rock’s scenic loop, Valley of Fire’s sandstone formations, Mount Charleston’s pine forest as the summer heat refuge. Spring and fall are the most reliable seasons. Summer afternoons routinely top 110.
