Monadnock
The Monadnock Region covers Cheshire County in southwestern New Hampshire, the rolling hill country built around Mount Monadnock — the 3,165-foot peak that defines the region and gave its name to the geographic term for an isolated hill rising from a plain. The terrain runs gently rolling — hardwood forest cut by the Ashuelot River and the Connecticut River along the western boundary, with Monadnock itself rising abruptly from the surrounding foothills. Cheshire County is the only county in the region. Anchor towns include Keene (the largest city, with Keene State College), Jaffrey, Marlborough, Walpole, Fitzwilliam, and Rindge. Mount Monadnock State Park covers the mountain itself — one of the most-climbed peaks in the world; Pisgah State Park (the largest state park in New Hampshire) sits to the south; Cathedral of the Pines memorial chapel in Rindge anchors the spiritual-tourism side. Most trips here run hiking-and-small-town focused. Mount Monadnock draws the largest single-stream visitor traffic — multiple summit trails ranging from beginner to challenging; Keene’s downtown and Pumpkin Festival (formerly the Guinness world-record holder for jack-o-lanterns) anchor cultural visits; the Cathedral of the Pines and the antique-shop circuit through Fitzwilliam and Marlborough fill quieter days.
