Mountains Region
The Mountains Region covers northern Alabama, the southern tail of the Appalachian uplift where the Cumberland Plateau, Sand Mountain, and Lookout Mountain extend down from Tennessee. Elevations rarely exceed 2,000 feet, but the topography is real — sandstone-capped ridges, deep gorges, and a string of waterfalls that draw visitors from across the South. Madison County holds Huntsville and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center; DeKalb and Jackson counties carry the mountain country along the Tennessee line, including Mentone, Fort Payne, and Bridgeport; Cullman holds the central plateau; Cherokee, Etowah, and Marshall counties work the river-and-lake belt around Weiss, Guntersville, and Neely Henry lakes. Lauderdale, Limestone, and Morgan counties extend the region west toward the Shoals at Florence and Muscle Shoals. Trips here lean outdoor and aerospace. Huntsville handles the Space Center, Redstone Arsenal, and the Tennessee Valley brewery scene; the DeKalb mountain country (Little River Canyon, DeSoto State Park, Cathedral Caverns) carries the hiking and waterfall traffic; the Shoals draws music-history visitors to the FAME and Muscle Shoals studios.
