North Central
North Central Florida covers the broad agricultural-and-spring country that stretches from the Georgia line south through the Suwannee River basin to the Gulf. The terrain is rolling — pine forest, hardwood swamps, and a network of crystal-clear springs fed by the Floridan aquifer — with Tallahassee anchoring the western edge and Gainesville the eastern. Leon County holds Tallahassee, the state capital and home of Florida State and Florida A&M; Alachua holds Gainesville and the University of Florida; outlying counties along the Suwannee — Suwannee, Hamilton, Madison, Lafayette, Dixie — cover the rural agricultural belt. Other anchors include Live Oak, Lake City, Perry, Cedar Key, and Steinhatchee. Wakulla Springs State Park, Ichetucknee Springs State Park, the Suwannee River, and the Apalachicola National Forest’s eastern tail concentrate the public-land scenery. Most trips here are spring-and-river focused. The aquifer feeds dozens of swimmable springs (Ginnie, Blue, Madison Blue, Manatee, Wakulla); the Suwannee runs canoe and tubing trips; college football drives Tallahassee and Gainesville fall weekends. Spring through fall is the strongest season for spring tubing.
