Northeast

Northeast Colorado covers the far eastern plains of the state, the broad agricultural country running from the Front Range east to the Nebraska and Kansas lines. The terrain is flat to gently rolling — short-grass prairie giving way to dryland and irrigated farmland — drained by the South Platte River as it works east toward Nebraska. Elevations stay around 3,800 to 4,500 feet, lower than most of Colorado. Cheyenne, Elbert, Kit Carson, Lincoln, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, and Yuma counties cover the region. Anchor towns include Sterling, Fort Morgan, Brush, Holyoke, Yuma, Wray, Burlington, and Limon. The Pawnee National Grassland sits in the northwest corner; the South Platte’s wetlands and reservoirs support significant migratory bird traffic. Most trips here are agricultural-and-historical, paced for travelers willing to take county roads between courthouse-square towns. Old Town Burlington’s Kit Carson County Carousel, the Pawnee Buttes, the Overland Trail markers, and the Fort Morgan and Sterling museums anchor the cultural itinerary; bird watching along the South Platte and pheasant hunting in the fall draw outdoor visitors. The region functions as Colorado’s quieter, less-photographed eastern half.
