Northwest
Northwest Florida covers the long Panhandle stretching from the Alabama line east to the Apalachicola River, a 200-mile-plus run of barrier-island beaches and pine flatwoods. The Gulf coast here holds the whitest sand in the country — quartz washed down from the Appalachians over geological time — and the water shifts emerald green in summer. Escambia County holds Pensacola; Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Gulf, and Franklin counties carry the coastal anchors at Navarre Beach, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Seaside, Panama City Beach, Apalachicola, and Mexico Beach. Holmes, Washington, Jackson, Calhoun, and Liberty fill the inland tier. Gulf Islands National Seashore covers the Pensacola-area barrier islands; the Apalachicola National Forest, St. George Island State Park, and St. Joseph Peninsula State Park anchor the coastal public lands east of Panama City. Most trips split between two coasts. The Pensacola-Destin-30A corridor handles the family-beach itinerary — sugar-sand beaches, condo and cottage rentals, Naval Aviation Museum traffic; the Forgotten Coast east of Panama City (Apalachicola, Cape San Blas, St. George) runs quieter oyster-and-fishing-village weekends. Spring and fall are most reliable; hurricane season runs through November.
