Piney Woods

The Piney Woods occupy the eastern third of Texas, the southwestern tip of the Southern pine forest that runs from the Atlantic to the Sabine River. The terrain is gently rolling, heavily timbered with loblolly and shortleaf pine, and broken by lakes, creek bottoms, and the Sabine, Neches, and Trinity rivers. Annual rainfall here is the highest in Texas — enough to support hardwood swamps and dogwood understory along with the pine. Smith, Cherokee, Anderson, Angelina, Nacogdoches, Polk, Tyler, and Jasper counties make up the core, with Tyler, Longview, Marshall, Lufkin, and Nacogdoches as the main towns. Caddo Lake — the only natural lake in Texas — sits on the Louisiana line; Big Thicket National Preserve protects a botanically diverse stretch in the southern counties; Lake Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend handle most of the recreational water. Trips here lean toward small-town and outdoor — the rose gardens and antique scene in Tyler, the historic squares of Nacogdoches and Marshall, and the Caddo cypress swamps. Most visits combine the Tyler–Nacogdoches small-town circuit with a stop at Caddo Lake or one of the East Texas reservoirs.
