Riverfront Country
Riverfront Country covers Sarpy County in eastern Nebraska, a single-county region wedged between the Missouri River and the Platte and bordered on the north by Douglas County and Omaha. The terrain is gently rolling Missouri-bluff country — Loess hills along the river, oak-and-hickory forest in the steeper draws, and the broad agricultural plain that flattens out as you move west toward the Platte. Bellevue is the oldest continuously occupied town in Nebraska (founded 1822 as a fur-trading post) and holds Offutt Air Force Base; Papillion holds the county seat; Gretna holds Vala’s Pumpkin Patch (one of the country’s largest fall agritourism attractions). The Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum sits just south of Bellevue and draws aviation visitors from across the region; Fontenelle Forest Nature Center anchors the natural-area side; Schramm Park State Recreation Area and the Aksarben Aquarium round out family-day attractions. Most trips here run as Omaha-extensions. Bellevue’s Sarpy County Historical Museum and Fontenelle Forest carry the historical and outdoor side; the SAC museum handles the aviation itinerary; Vala’s runs September and October fall-festival traffic; the rest of the region functions as a quiet residential adjunct to Omaha rather than a distinct destination.
