Skylands Region
The Skylands Region covers the northwestern corner of New Jersey, the rolling-to-mountainous country that gives the lie to the state’s reputation as flat suburbs and shore. The terrain is the densest concentration of mountain country in New Jersey — the Kittatinny Range, the Watchung Mountains, the Skylands themselves rising along the Pennsylvania border. The Delaware River runs along the western edge; the Highlands rise above 1,500 feet at High Point, the highest point in the state. Five counties cover the region. Morris holds Morristown (the largest city, with Morristown National Historical Park preserving Washington’s 1779-80 winter encampment); Hunterdon holds Flemington and Lambertville; Sussex holds Newton and the High Point State Park country; Warren holds Phillipsburg; Somerset holds Somerville. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area straddles the Pennsylvania-New Jersey line; High Point State Park caps the northern end at 1,803 feet; Mountain Creek and Hidden Valley anchor the New Jersey ski areas. Most trips here run outdoor and historical. Delaware Water Gap pulls hikers and climbers; Morristown National Historical Park anchors the Revolutionary War circuit; the Lambertville-New Hope corridor along the Delaware runs antique shops and weekend dining; Mountain Creek handles winter ski traffic. Fall foliage runs strong through October.
