South Central
South Central Colorado covers the central Rockies and the upper Rio Grande basin, a stretch running from the Pikes Peak region west to the San Luis Valley. The terrain stacks from 4,000 feet on the lower plains around Colorado Springs to over 14,000 at the Collegiate Peaks and Pikes Peak. The San Luis Valley — a high alpine basin at 7,500 feet ringed by mountains — sits at the heart of the region. El Paso, Teller, Park, Lake, Chaffee, Fremont, Custer, Saguache, Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Rio Grande, and Mineral counties cover the region. Anchor cities include Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, Cripple Creek, Buena Vista, Salida, Leadville (at 10,152 feet, North America’s highest incorporated city), Alamosa, and Cañon City. Great Sand Dunes National Park sits in the San Luis Valley; Florissant Fossil Beds, Garden of the Gods, and the Royal Gorge round out the public-land scenery. Most trips split among three threads. The Pikes Peak region handles the largest visitor numbers — the cog railway, Garden of the Gods, the Air Force Academy. The Arkansas River corridor between Buena Vista and Salida holds Colorado’s most popular whitewater. The San Luis Valley draws birders, dunes visitors, and high-country travel.
