Southeast
Southeast North Dakota covers the southeast corner of the state, the agricultural country running from the South Dakota line north to Mayville and from the Minnesota border west to Valley City. The terrain is mostly flat — the southern bed of glacial Lake Agassiz, with the Sheyenne River cutting through the central counties and the Red River defining the eastern boundary. Fargo and West Fargo anchor the urban core in Cass County. Eight counties cover the region. Cass holds Fargo (the largest city in North Dakota and the home of North Dakota State University) and West Fargo; Barnes holds Valley City and Lake Ashtabula; Richland holds Wahpeton; Ransom holds Lisbon and Fort Ransom State Park; Traill holds Hillsboro. The Sheyenne National Grassland (the only national grassland in the tallgrass prairie biome) sits in Ransom and Sargent counties; Lake Ashtabula handles the major water recreation. Most trips here center on Fargo. Fargo handles the urban itinerary — the Plains Art Museum, the Fargo Theatre, the Hjemkomst Center (with a full-scale Viking ship replica) just across the river in Moorhead. The Bonanzaville pioneer-village complex in West Fargo and the Sheyenne National Grassland fill day trips.
