Central Coast

The Central Coast runs along the middle stretch of California between the Bay Area and the Los Angeles basin, covering roughly 250 miles of coastline from Santa Cruz County south to Ventura. The landscape is dramatic — coastal mountains plunging into the Pacific, oak-and-grass valleys behind the ridges, and a string of mission towns connecting them. Highway 1 carries most of the scenic traffic; US 101 handles the inland route. Five counties define the region — Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, San Benito, and Ventura — with anchor towns at Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, San Simeon, Cambria, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, Solvang, and Ventura. Hearst Castle, Pinnacles National Park, Channel Islands National Park, and Los Padres National Forest carry the major public-land draws. Most trips are drive-driven. Highway 1 from Carmel through Big Sur to San Simeon is one of the most scenic stretches in the country; the Santa Ynez and Edna wine valleys cluster vineyards within an easy day’s reach; Santa Barbara handles the Mediterranean-style city itinerary. Summer fog can blanket the coast through July; spring and fall are the most reliable seasons.
